Verstappen controls rain-hit Singapore sprint as Russell crashes and McLarens collide

Max Verstappen won an incident-packed sprint at the Singapore Grand Prix after George Russell crashed out on the opening lap. Russell had led through mixed conditions, with dry and wet sections across the circuit, but ran wide at the final corner and lost control of his Mercedes. The car spun into the inside wall, bounced back across the track and was avoided by the rest of the field.

The start was delayed by 30 minutes after a tropical downpour left parts of the circuit soaked and standing water at Turns Two and Three, while the second sector remained dry. Two safety-car laps preceded the race, and another safety-car period followed Russell's accident. Verstappen held off Lewis Hamilton after the restart before building a clear lead, with Hamilton second and Charles Leclerc third.

A final-lap clash between McLaren team-mates Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri changed the order behind them. Norris tried to pass Piastri at Turn Five after getting alongside, but the cars touched and spun together. Piastri hit the barriers and retired, while Norris continued and finished eighth. Kimi Antonelli was promoted to fourth, extending his championship lead to 89 points; Liam Lawson, Oliver Bearman and Nico Hulkenberg also finished ahead of Norris.

The result gave Verstappen his second Formula 1 win in seven days and his first victory in Singapore. The stewards were due to investigate the Norris-Piastri collision, while the delayed sprint moved grand prix qualifying back by 30 minutes to 14: 30 BST.
