Australia reached 389-9 at tea on day two of the first men’s Test against South Africa at Kingsmead, adding 113 runs after Nathan Lyon’s dismissal. Matt Renshaw was unbeaten on 190, while Josh Hazlewood had joined him with five not out.
Lyon fell for 21 at 364-9 when Jansen trapped him lbw. Before that, he and Renshaw had extended Australia’s ninth-wicket stand to 100, with Renshaw passing 150 and recording his highest Test score.
Australia had resumed on 198-6, with Renshaw on 51 and captain Pat Cummins on 39. Renshaw steadily controlled the innings as South Africa rotated their bowlers and spread the field, while Lyon’s late resistance helped Australia move beyond 300 and then 350.
The visitors’ position strengthened further after Lyon’s departure, as Hazlewood looked comfortable alongside Renshaw. Fading light and afternoon cloud were present in Durban, but play continued through the extended session. South Africa’s weary fielding effort left Australia with a substantial lower-order contribution still intact, an implication that the hosts may face a demanding first innings when they bat.
