Coventry stun Newcastle 4-1 as 25-year home wait ends in a night of late goals

Coventry City ended a 25-year wait for a home Premier League victory by beating Newcastle United 4-1 at the Coventry Building Society Arena on Monday night.

Jack Rudoni opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the sixth minute after Newcastle goalkeeper Lukáš Horníček brought down Sidiki Cherif while trying to recover a loose ball. Newcastle created chances to equalize, but Bobby Thomas twice denied Matias Fernandez-Pardo, including a goal-line block just before halftime.

Cherif doubled Coventry’s lead three minutes into the second half with a powerful first-time shot through a crowded penalty area. Newcastle had more possession and produced 19 shots to Coventry’s nine, but Sven Botman’s spectacular 70th-minute strike was their only reward.

Coventry restored its two-goal advantage in the 81st minute when substitute Ellis Simms finished after Newcastle lost possession deep in its own half. Another substitute, Stephen Mfuni, completed the scoring five minutes later with a bending shot from the edge of the area. The victory followed Coventry’s 1-0 win at Nottingham Forest before the international break and gave Frank Lampard’s newly promoted side consecutive league victories.

Newcastle, managed by Matthias Jaissle, had been seeking a win that would have lifted the club into fourth place.
