Coventry City ended a 25-year wait for a Premier League home win by defeating Newcastle United 4-1 at the Coventry Building Society Arena on Monday.
Jack Rudoni put Coventry ahead from the penalty spot in the sixth minute after Newcastle goalkeeper Lukáš Horníček brought down Sidiki Cherif. Newcastle created several chances before halftime, but Bobby Thomas twice prevented an equaliser, heading one effort off the line and recovering to clear another shot.
Cherif doubled Coventry’s lead three minutes into the second half with his first Premier League goal, driving through a crowded penalty area after Newcastle failed to clear a long throw. Sven Botman reduced the deficit in the 70th minute with a powerful strike from outside the box, but Coventry restored its two-goal advantage when Ellis Simms scored in the 81st minute after Joelinton lost possession.
Stephen Mfuni completed the scoring five minutes later, cutting into the area before curling a left-footed finish into the bottom corner. The result gave newly promoted Coventry a second successive victory and lifted Frank Lampard’s side out of the relegation zone.
Newcastle had been seeking a win that would have moved them into fourth place, but the defeat followed a 4-1 loss at Leeds in their previous league match. Coventry’s aggressive approach left Newcastle with possession and openings, yet the home side’s pace in transition and late finishing turned a competitive contest into a decisive victory.
