Ajer’s late equaliser keeps Aston Villa and unbeaten Brentford level in feisty 2-2 draw

Ajer’s late equaliser keeps Aston Villa and unbeaten Brentford level in feisty 2-2 draw

Aston Villa’s search for a home win continued as Brentford twice came from behind to draw 2-2 at Villa Park. The result kept Brentford unbeaten in the league this season and extended Keith Andrews’s unbeaten record against Unai Emery.

Brentford took the lead when Jaidon Anthony pressured Tyrone Mings into a loose pass, allowing Yarmolyuk to fire in after Kevin Schade’s cross was cleared. Villa responded 88 seconds later, with Nicolas Jackson finishing from close range after Emi Buendía’s shot took a deflection.

Caoimhín Kelleher made a double save before half-time to deny Jackson and John McGinn, while Zion Suzuki later stopped a Schade volley. Villa moved ahead in the 77th minute when McGinn converted after Manzambi found him, but Kristoffer Ajer surged into the box and equalised after his shot clipped Victor Lindelöf. Ajer was later booked for disputing a decision by referee Craig Pawson.

The draw prolonged Villa’s winless home run since the Villa Park revamp left the stadium with three stands in use. It also followed Emery’s sharp criticism of Villa’s previous home defeat by Nottingham Forest.
