Maddison return inspires Tottenham to first league win as Coventry are beaten 3-1

Tottenham ended a six-match winless start to the Premier League season with a 3-1 victory over Coventry City at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The result lifted Tottenham from last place to 16th, level with Coventry on six points but ahead on goal difference.

James Maddison marked his first competitive start since May 2025 with a superb 14th-minute opener. After Mohammed Kudus worked space on the right, Maddison met the cutback with a curling first-time shot from 22 yards that found the top corner. The goal came against Coventry, the club where Maddison began his professional career, and gave Tottenham their first league goal in the opening half of a match this season.

Coventry responded five minutes into the second half. Jack Rudoni’s initial effort was blocked by teammate Brandon Thomas-Asante, but Rudoni recovered the ball and scored with his second attempt to make it 1-1. Tottenham regained the lead in the 58th minute when Omar Marmoush turned away from Milan van Ewijk and curled a right-footed strike into the far corner for his first goal since joining the club.

Tottenham had to withstand late pressure before securing the points in stoppage time. Dominic Solanke laid the ball back into the path of Ben Davies, who struck a low left-footed effort that bounced over goalkeeper Carl Rushworth in the sixth added minute. Dejan Kulusevski then completed his return from a 526-day injury absence when he came on late, receiving a loud reception and making his first competitive appearance since May 2025.

The win gives Roberto De Zerbi’s side a platform to build on, but the match also exposed the tension of protecting a narrow lead: Coventry continued to threaten after equalising, while Tottenham needed late defending and Davies’s goal to remove the danger.
