Rain delayed the start of the second Test’s second day at St George’s Park in Gqeberha, leaving South Africa on 20 for two after only 12. 2 overs were possible on the opening day. Australia won the toss and chose to field before persistent showers repeatedly halted play.
Scott Boland, selected ahead of Nathan Lyon, gave Australia an early advantage by dismissing Aiden Markram for 11 and David Bedingham without scoring in successive deliveries. South Africa captain Temba Bavuma was unbeaten on four with debutant Marques Ackerman, who had made five when play stopped.
The pitch remained covered while the outfield absorbed the overnight and morning rain. Umpires inspected the ground several times, but water was still rising beneath their shoes, making conditions unsuitable for play. Ground staff later removed covers, prepared the stumps and repainted the crease as sunshine appeared, although another inspection was scheduled before any possible restart.
Australia entered the match with a 1-0 lead in the three-Test series after winning the opening Test in Durban by 214 runs. The first day in Gqeberha had already been reduced to about an hour of play, and the second day’s delay further narrowed the time available for either side to build a result.
