Coventry overwhelm Newcastle 4-1 to end 25-year wait for a Premier League home victory

Coventry City ended a 25-year wait for a home Premier League victory by beating Newcastle United 4-1 at the Coventry Building Society Arena on Monday. The result gave Frank Lampard’s newly promoted side consecutive league wins and lifted them out of the relegation zone into 14th place.

Jack Rudoni opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the sixth minute after Newcastle goalkeeper Lukáš Horníček brought down Sidiki Cherif. Newcastle created chances to respond, but Bobby Thomas cleared two dangerous efforts before halftime, including one from Matias Fernandez-Pardo after he had rounded goalkeeper Carl Rushworth.

Cherif doubled Coventry’s lead three minutes after the restart with a powerful low strike through a crowded penalty area. The 19-year-old, making his full Premier League debut, scored his first goal for the club. Newcastle reduced the deficit in the 70th minute when Sven Botman drove a long-range shot into the top corner, his first goal since February.

Coventry restored its two-goal advantage in the 81st minute through substitute Ellis Simms, whose deflected effort went in with his first touch after he came off the bench. Stephen Mfuni completed the scoring five minutes later, cutting into the area and finishing with his first senior goal. The 18-year-old, on loan from Manchester City, became Coventry’s youngest Premier League scorer.

Newcastle had been seeking a win that would have moved the club into fourth place, but the defeat was its second consecutive 4-1 loss away from home. Manager Matthias Jaissle said his team controlled parts of the match but failed to perform cleanly in both penalty areas, while acknowledging that the result was not acceptable to supporters.

Lampard described the victory as a complete performance built on energy, spirit and work ethic. Coventry will next visit winless Tottenham seeking a third straight victory, while Newcastle will try to respond at home against Aston Villa.
