Thomas Waddingham scored an 82nd-minute winner as Portsmouth came from behind to defeat Millwall 2-1 at Fratton Park on Saturday. The decisive goal came when a blocked Tyrese Shade shot struck Jake Cooper and then ricocheted off Waddingham into the net, settling a scrappy contest played in heavy rain and surface water. The result extended Portsmouth’s strong run to three wins in four matches and moved John Mousinho’s side into the Championship’s top eight before the later fixtures.
Millwall took the lead after six minutes when Portsmouth goalkeeper Nicolas Schmid received a short goal kick and passed directly to Jenson Metcalfe, who finished past him. Portsmouth equalised nine minutes later when Adrian Segecic’s near-post corner was diverted into the visitors’ goal by Lyndon Dykes. Millwall controlled much of the second half and went close through Camiel Neghli, while Portsmouth goalkeeper Max Crocombe saved from Shade before Waddingham’s fortunate intervention. Portsmouth survived four minutes of added time, although Ebou Adams was denied a late penalty appeal.
The defeat left Millwall with six points from their last seven Championship matches. Portsmouth’s victory was watched by 20,476 people at Fratton Park, where Waddingham returned from an ankle injury as a substitute and produced the late moment that decided the game.
Norwich ended a six-match losing streak with a 3-1 comeback win at Charlton. Charlie Kelman put the hosts ahead early at The Valley, but Paris Maghoma levelled before Mathias Kvistgaarden gave Norwich the lead, and an Ivan Mesik own goal completed the turnaround. The loss was Charlton’s first at home in the Championship this season and left them without a league victory in nine matches, while the win eased pressure on Norwich head coach Philippe Clement.
Elsewhere, Middlesbrough moved temporarily to the top of the table after beating Bolton 5-1 on Friday. Aidan Morris, Will Lankshear and a Lewis Brunt own goal gave Middlesbrough a commanding first-half advantage before Thelonius Bair pulled one back in stoppage time. Amario Cozier-Duberry restored the visitors’ control in the 73rd minute, and Lankshear scored again five minutes later for his 11th league goal. Sheffield United drew 1-1 with 10-man Derby at Bramall Lane after Bobby Clark gave Derby a first-half lead and Patrick Bamford equalised in the 79th minute before leaving the field after falling awkwardly.
