Tottenham claimed a rare 2-0 Premier League victory at Chelsea on Saturday, giving Roberto De Zerbi his side’s second league win of the campaign and a second consecutive victory. De Zerbi described the performance as his best since arriving at the club and said Tottenham were beginning to look like a complete team.
Omar Marmoush had Tottenham’s clearest opening before half-time, but his close-range effort was saved. Chelsea also tested Antonin Kinsky through Cole Palmer, Jordan Henderson and Pedro Neto, while James Maddison was forced off early in the second half.
Tottenham finally moved ahead in the 77th minute after Mateus Fernandes delivered a corner. Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders came out to punch clear but misjudged the ball and sent it over his own line.
Chelsea’s position worsened three minutes later when Palmer was sent off for a second yellow card after standing on Conor Gallagher during a challenge. The dismissal was Chelsea’s 100th Premier League red card, excluding rescinded cards. Mathys Tel completed Tottenham’s victory in the 87th minute with a solo run from deep before cutting inside and driving a low shot into the bottom corner.
The clean-sheet win was Tottenham’s first against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in all competitions since December 1986. Chelsea have now conceded eight Premier League goals from set pieces this season, twice as many as any other team, while their failure to score marked only the second time in their last 17 home league London derbies that they had been shut out. Tottenham’s next league match is against Crystal Palace, while Chelsea are scheduled to face Liverpool in the League Cup.
