CNN, MS NOW and Politico say they will sue the Trump administration for barring them from White House grounds, alleging First Amendment violations.
CNN, MS NOW and Politico announced they will file a lawsuit against the Trump administration after President Trump declared a ban on the three outlets, asserting the action violates their First Amendment rights to cover the president. President Trump said the ban was a response to what he described as negative coverage, posting on Truth Social that media outlets “shouldn’t be able to constantly write or report FICTION and LIES” and later stating that a country allowing such reporting is “something wrong.” The news organizations said the White House revoked their journalists’ credentials without notice or process, arguing that the move threatens press freedom and the public’s right to independent journalism free from government interference. Press‑freedom advocates echoed the claim that the ban is unconstitutional. Federal courts have previously ruled that once the government opens its doors to a press corps it may not remove specific outlets without giving them a chance to rebut. During Trump’s first term, the White House rescinded credentials of CNN’s Jim Acosta and Playboy correspondent Brian Karem, both of which were restored after court challenges. The outcome of the pending lawsuits remains uncertain.
