Guard member wounded, suspect arrested after gunfire near Eastern Market

A National Guard member was shot in the leg late Sunday while trying to intervene in a fight near Eastern Market in Southeast Washington, police said. The suspected shooter was also wounded and arrested, and both were hospitalized with injuries described as non-life-threatening.

Seven or eight Guard members were in a parked van monitoring a fight on a sidewalk when they got out to intervene and heard gunfire, interim Metropolitan Police Chief Jeffery Carroll said.

Police said one person involved in the fight pulled out a firearm and ran into an alley. Guard members ordered the person to drop the weapon, but the suspect pointed it toward them, prompting return fire. Three Guard members discharged their weapons, Carroll said; the suspect was struck in the abdomen, although it was not immediately clear which Guard member hit the suspect.

Carroll said there was no continuing threat to the community and asked anyone with information to contact police.

The shooting occurred during a federal deployment of National Guard troops ordered by President Donald Trump in August 2025 as part of a crime-fighting operation.

Andrew Wolfe survived and has been recovering.
