Ed Sheeran admits 'mistakes' as he addresses Macklemore controversy at Philadelphia show

Ed Sheeran apologized and addressed the Macklemore tour controversy, condemning the Oct 7 Hamas attacks, calling Gaza’s situation unjustifiable, and noting ticket price drops and uncertain refunds.

Ed Sheeran opened his solo show in Philadelphia by apologising for "mistakes" and saying he never intended to be an activist musician, but that the dispute over rapper Macklemore’s removal has placed him in a heated free‑speech debate. He described the 7 October 2023 Hamas‑led attacks as "horrific" and called the situation in Gaza "catastrophic, unjustifiable and disproportionate," adding that he feels compelled to speak on the humanitarian issue.

Sheeran said the decision to drop Macklemore was made by his promoters, not by him, and noted that several support acts have quit the tour in solidarity with the rapper. He observed that ticket prices for the show fell to $32 (£24) and that sales have declined on the remaining U.S. leg of the Loop Tour. Some fans reported receiving refunds, but Ticketmaster and concert promoter Messina Touring Group have not confirmed any reimbursements.

He expressed concern about venues pre‑approving content, affirmed that the concert remains a place where all views are welcome, and said he is working to find ways to help victims of the conflict while continuing to listen and learn. The concert proceeded despite a small number of pro‑Palestinian protesters outside the venue. Uncertainty remains regarding the exact number of refunds issued and the impact on future ticket pricing.
