Santa Monica police are investigating the death as a suspected overdose and have said there is no indication of foul play.
The Los Angeles County medical examiner performed an autopsy but has not determined a cause or manner of death. Toxicology testing is pending, and detectives are investigating how Gerber obtained drugs at the facility. Police received calls reporting a cardiac arrest and a possible overdose before officers arrived at the residence at about 9: 35 a.
Gerber had entered the facility only hours before his death. The residence describes itself as a mental-health recovery home offering partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient treatment and support for addiction and other mental-health conditions.
Crawford said in an Instagram tribute that she and her family were “beyond heartbroken, ” describing Gerber as a kind and vulnerable person and saying they felt blessed to have had him for 27 years. She and Rande Gerber asked for privacy through a family representative after his death.
His sister, model and actor Kaia Gerber, shared childhood videos, photographs and a four-page letter to her brother. She wrote about learning how to grieve someone she could no longer call and about the lasting bond between them.
Gerber followed his mother and sister into modeling. He signed with IMG as a teenager, made his runway debut for Moschino at 16 and later worked with major fashion brands.
He had also spoken publicly about mental-health and substance-use struggles. Through an Instagram series called “Mental Health Mondays, ” he discussed his experiences with drugs, rehabilitation and recovery. He was arrested in California for driving under the influence in 2019 and later received three years of probation. His family’s public tributes followed years in which he had described those difficulties openly.
The medical examiner’s toxicology review and the Santa Monica police investigation are the next confirmed steps in determining what happened.
