An explosion at a Syrian army weapons cache in Ayyash, Deir Az Zor killed 11 soldiers and wounded nine, with the cause still under investigation.
Eleven soldiers were killed and nine others wounded when an explosion hit a weapons cache at a Syrian Arab Army position in the town of Ayyash, western Deir Az Zor, according to the Ministry of Defence and the state news agency SANA.
The Syrian military held a funeral procession on Saturday, with bodies wrapped in national flags carried to the National Hospital in Deir Az Zor city, as shown in video broadcast by state broadcaster Al Ikhbiriya.
The cause of the blast has not been determined and an investigation is under way. The incident follows a September 9 explosion at a temporary weapons depot in Sarmada, Idlib, which the defence ministry said killed 14 soldiers, and a September 1 vehicle ammunition explosion in Binnish, Idlib, that killed five people.
The available reporting does not specify the trigger of the Deir Az Zor blast, and the outcome of the investigation remains pending.
