Qatar says Washington-Tehran diplomacy remains active as Hormuz and regional security dominate talks

Qatar says diplomatic engagement between Iran and the United States is continuing despite renewed regional tensions and fears that fighting could resume. Majed bin Mohammed Al Ansari, an adviser to Qatar’s prime minister and foreign ministry spokesperson, said both sides remained engaged in discussions on the nuclear agreement and related issues.

Qatar says the process includes direct and indirect technical meetings involving Iranian and American delegations, with mediators helping maintain contact between higher-level negotiations. The discussions cover Iran’s nuclear program, regional security and the Strait of Hormuz, where Qatar is calling for uninterrupted freedom of navigation.

The waterway is a central issue in the negotiations. Qatar says the first phase of the understandings focuses on clearing mines and restoring safe passage for ships, with the immediate priority being the protection of crews and cargo vessels. Some ships have crossed safely, while others have come under attack, and Qatar says clearing the strait will require complex technical work and international assistance coordinated by countries in the region.

And Iranian negotiators and Qatari and Pakistani mediators were described as making positive progress, but the parties still have unresolved differences over the Strait of Hormuz and Lebanon. The delegations did not hold direct talks with each other during that round, and further discussions were expected.

It has expressed solidarity with Oman over threats to its territorial waters and says the diplomatic track should account for the security concerns of all parties.

Qatari officials say the current framework includes a ceasefire, a memorandum of understanding and continued negotiations, but guarantees remain dependent on conditions on the ground. Doha says its immediate priorities are ending the war, restoring normal maritime traffic and protecting people across the region.
