The Vanguard S&P 500 ETF does not currently provide exposure to SpaceX or several major overseas semiconductor companies. The Vanguard Total World Stock ETF offers a broader alternative by tracking a global, free-float-adjusted index covering large-, mid- and small-capitalization companies worldwide.
The index committee also kept its profitability and minimum investable-float requirements, rejecting proposed exceptions based solely on a company’s market capitalization. That makes June 2027 the earliest possible eligibility date based on the seasoning rule, assuming SpaceX satisfies the other requirements.
The global fund began buying SpaceX gradually in June. As of Aug. 31, it held 453,258 shares, ranking SpaceX as its 261st-largest holding. The fund can also hold companies outside the United States, addressing the gap created by the S&P 500’s concentration in U.S. Large-cap stocks and its exclusion of newly public companies until they meet index rules.
