Target’s 2026 stock surge is backed by a new CEO, modest sales growth and a 55-year dividend streak

Target’s stock has rebounded sharply in 2026, outperforming the technology-heavy “Magnificent Seven” as investors have focused on its relatively low valuation and dividend income. The recovery follows years of weakness: shares remain 39% below their level five years ago, and the last positive year before 2026 was 2021, when the stock gained 31%.

Target then announced a multiyear plan centered on merchandising, the in-store and digital guest experience, technology and investment in employees and communities.

The business has shown improvement, although its growth remains moderate.

The stock’s income appeal remains central to the investment case. Its dividend yield is about 3%, compared with roughly 1% for the broader market, and Target has raised its payout for 55 consecutive years.

Analysis: Target’s rebound reflects a combination of leadership change, improving traffic and digital sales, shareholder income and a depressed starting valuation. The quarterly results also show why the recovery is not the same as a full business turnaround: sales growth was measured, comparisons were relatively easy, and a substantial portion of the earnings improvement came from the tariff refund.
