Musk Pledges SpaceX Shares to U.S. Children as Tesla Merger Speculation Intensifies

Elon Musk said Monday that he plans to give one SpaceX share to every child in the United States next year, calling the pledge “the first of many.”

The stock was little changed in early Monday extended trading after falling through the previous week.

The announcement arrived as investors continued to assess speculation about a possible SpaceX acquisition of Tesla. Barclays analysts led by Dan Levy said a transaction could be announced before Tesla’s annual shareholder meeting, which is due by Dec. 6, although a later deal could emerge within six to 12 months. They described SpaceX as the more likely buyer in an all-stock transaction and estimated that Musk could hold about 37% of the combined company and control roughly 56% of its voting power, depending on the structure and valuations.

Barclays identified artificial-intelligence integration as a central rationale, including links between Tesla’s robotaxis and humanoid robots and SpaceX’s AI systems. The analysts also cited Musk’s planned Terafab chip project as a reason to consolidate governance and computing resources. Any merger would require shareholder approval, and neither company had announced a signed transaction.

RBC Capital raised its Tesla price target to $500 from $475 in July, including a premium tied to a potential SpaceX combination. Those figures were scenario estimates based on an unconfirmed transaction, not terms of an announced agreement.
