Matson’s second-quarter results showed a sharp earnings recovery as stronger China freight demand helped lift revenue, operating income and profit.
Matson said China demand strengthened after the Lunar New Year and continued building into the second quarter.
Its earlier 2026 plan called for consolidated operating income to modestly exceed 2025, with the second and third quarters expected to be the strongest parts of the year. The company also expects full-year China volume to be moderately higher than in 2025, while Hawaii, Guam and Alaska volumes are expected to remain broadly comparable with the prior year.
The recovery is not uniform across the business. Logistics operating income fell to $6. 8 million in the first quarter, primarily because of a lower contribution from supply-chain management, and Matson expects the segment’s full-year operating income to approach its 2025 level. Fuel prices also rose during the first quarter, creating a temporary lag before surcharges could recover those costs.
Analysis: The results place China freight demand and the company’s seasonal second-half outlook at the center of the earnings case. The stronger second quarter provides evidence of an improving operating trend, but the outlook remains tied to freight volumes, fuel-cost recovery and the stability of trans-Pacific trade conditions.
