Hana Bank issues South Korea’s first digital bond using Euroclear’s blockchain

Hana Bank issued a $100 million digital bond on Euroclear’s blockchain, achieving same‑day settlement and marking South Korea’s first direct use of the platform.

Hana Bank issued a $100 million foreign‑currency digital bond through Euroclear’s blockchain settlement platform, completing the transaction on the issuance date (T+0) instead of the three‑to‑five business days typical of conventional systems. The bank said it was the first Korean financial institution to directly use Euroclear’s distributed‑ledger infrastructure.

The bond was processed via Euroclear’s Digital Financial Market Infrastructure (D‑FMI), which handles issuance, registration and settlement on a distributed ledger. Bond allocations and payments were finalized on the issuance date, and Standard Chartered acted as the sole lead manager while Hana used documentation from its existing global medium‑term note programme.

The issuance illustrates how Korean banks can connect to established global blockchain settlement networks ahead of South Korea’s planned tokenized‑securities framework, scheduled for launch in February 2027 by the Financial Services Commission. The D‑FMI platform links to Euroclear’s settlement network, allowing institutional investors to buy and trade the bond through their current Euroclear accounts without separate systems.

A Hana Bank official said the T+0 settlement “represents a significant step beyond simply diversifying our funding channels, as they bring blockchain technology into the capital market.” Both Hana Bank and Euroclear did not respond to a CoinDesk request for comment.
