Google Cloud disruption knocks Revolut services offline across Europe

Revolut experienced a service disruption on Tuesday affecting multiple services, with customers unable to access the app, make card payments or withdraw cash from ATMs. The company said customers’ money and data remained safe and that engineers were working to restore service.

The disruption coincided with failures in Google Cloud’s europe-west2 region, which is based in London. Google reported elevated errors and intermittent network failures across a broad range of services, including Cloud Storage, Compute Engine, Kubernetes Engine, Pub/Sub, Cloud SQL, Google Cloud networking and several database and memory products. Pacific time on October 19, and engineers were still investigating on October 20.

The Revolut outage was later linked to the Google Cloud incident. Google said there was no workaround available at the time, although affected customers were advised to move workloads to another zone or region where feasible. Problems were also reported at other banks and businesses, including Lloyds, HSBC, Screwfix and DPD, but it was not established that every disruption had the same cause.

Revolut also apologised and said work to restore its services had been under way since the problem was identified.
