Bitcoin’s price has cleared a key hurdle that has historically preceded major bull runs

Bitcoin closed above its 50‑week moving average for the first time in 45 weeks, a historically bullish signal, but future gains depend on holding the level.

Bitcoin closed the week ended Sept. 20 above its 50‑week moving average for the first time in 45 weeks, trading near $81,450 and up about 6 % for the week and 29 % over the prior 35 days. The 50‑week average sits around $78,115.

Galaxy Research’s head Alex Thorn described the crossover as a potentially important confirmation that the bear phase may have run its course and a new uptrend could be emerging. Galaxy’s review of major Bitcoin slumps since 2011 found 13 instances of closing above the 50‑week average; in 11 of those cases the market did not set a new low and subsequently launched large bull runs, such as the rallies after 2012, 2015, 2019 and 2023.

The analysis also notes two failed crossovers in late 2021 and early 2022, underscoring that the pattern is not infallible. As of the article’s writing, whether Bitcoin can sustain the advance depends on its ability to remain above the moving average in the weeks ahead, and past performance does not guarantee future results.
