Markets Weigh Canada Trade Talks as Anthropic Sets Up Potentially Record IPO

Investors entered Tuesday weighing renewed U.S. -Canada trade discussions alongside Anthropic’s filing for a potential initial public offering that could become one of the largest ever. The market agenda also included a Federal Reserve policy decision, economic data and earnings from major technology companies, leaving traders focused on both policy risk and the heavy financing demands of artificial-intelligence companies.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Monday that discussions with the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump had intensified slightly, but he attributed any movement to Washington coming closer to Canada’s position. Canada’s negotiating stance, he said, had not changed. Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc’s office described the talks as constructive, while Carney said he could not be certain that Trump would honor a new agreement.

The talks followed an August breakdown after Canada rejected proposed U.S. Trump later imposed 50% tariffs on roughly $20 billion of Canadian goods, prompting Canadian retaliation and additional trade restrictions. Midterm elections, though he has also acknowledged that negotiations could take months.

Anthropic’s filing added a separate source of market attention. The filing identified Nasdaq Global Select Market as the intended listing venue and “ANT” as the proposed ticker.

Anthropic said proceeds could support infrastructure and acquisitions, while its disclosures also highlighted regulatory, staffing and technology risks. The filing gives the company’s seven founders 50. 1% of shareholder voting power through a special share class and describes a Long-Term Benefit Trust intended to preserve influence over public-safety decisions.

For markets, the combination of trade negotiations, central-bank uncertainty and an unusually large AI listing keeps attention divided between immediate policy signals and the capital requirements of the technology boom. The next concrete markers are the continuation of U.S. -Canada negotiations, the Federal Reserve’s decision and Anthropic’s eventual determination of offering terms and timing.
