Alphabet’s AI Spending Faces a New Test as Cloud Growth Accelerates

Alphabet enters its Oct. 28 third-quarter earnings report with strong growth in Google Cloud but rising pressure to show that its artificial-intelligence spending is producing durable returns.

Alphabet said it began recognizing revenue from TPU system sales delivered to customer data centers during the quarter, adding a commercial channel for its custom AI processors alongside cloud-computing revenue.

That momentum came with a much larger investment bill.

The company does not separately disclose TPU revenue, so the next results will offer investors an opportunity to assess demand for the chips through management’s comments and the broader performance of Google Cloud. The key questions are whether Cloud can maintain its accelerated growth, whether its backlog converts into revenue, and whether TPU sales are becoming a meaningful business rather than remaining embedded within a larger infrastructure buildout.

Alphabet’s advertising operations continue to provide the financial base for that expansion. The third-quarter report will therefore be judged against both sides of the AI investment equation: continued expansion in the businesses using the new capacity and evidence that the spending is translating into cash-generating revenue.
