President Donald Trump said Saturday that the United States might “finish” its war with Iran or reach a deal, leaving open the possibility of renewed military action as Washington and Tehran remained divided over the Strait of Hormuz. He did not announce a specific attack plan or a completed agreement.
Iran’s ambassador to Pakistan, Reza Amiri Moghadam, said Tehran remained willing to negotiate under an interim arrangement brokered by Pakistan and Qatar in June. He said Iran had conveyed through Pakistan that it was prepared to reopen the Strait of Hormuz if Washington lifted its naval blockade, but said Trump had rejected that condition and insisted the blockade continue.
The June arrangement was intended to restore shipping through the strait, end the blockade and begin negotiations over a broader settlement involving Iran’s nuclear program. Moghadam said the discussions remained possible, while Iran’s foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, said indirect contacts through mediators were continuing over a proposed seven-day ceasefire. That proposal would involve ending the blockade, lifting sanctions on Iranian oil sales, reopening the strait and releasing frozen Iranian assets, but the United States and Iran had not resolved the terms.
