Indian debut film “Angh” won Toronto Film Festival’s Platform award, granting it automatic entry into the 2027 Oscars International Feature race.
The Indian feature “Angh,” the directorial debut of Theja Rio, captured the top prize in the Toronto Film Festival’s Platform section. The award includes an automatic berth in the Oscars’ International Feature Film race for 2027.
Set in 1960s Nagaland, the story follows an elderly Konyak chief and his son, the last holdouts of their village’s ancestral beliefs. The cast is drawn largely from indigenous Naga communities, with BAFTA winner Douglas Henshall also appearing. Variety reviewer Siddhant Adlakha praised the film’s simplicity and its challenge to conventional cinematic perspectives.
Producers Nancy Nisa Beso and Theja Rio, alongside executive producer Gaurav Dhingra, highlighted the film’s cultural significance and personal dedication. Jungle Book Studio acquired global sales rights and will handle international and local distribution. “Angh” marks the feature debut of Winter Hymns Films and is co‑produced by Undercover Squirrel.
