Chile’s ‘Erratics,’ Blending Denis Lavant, Speculative Fiction and Ghost Cinema, Bows at San Sebastián New Directors Competition

Chilean debut feature "Erratics" starring Denis Lavant premieres in San Sebastián’s New Directors competition.

Thomas Woodroffe’s first feature, "Erratics" (Spanish title "Bloques erráticos"), opened the San Sebastián Film Festival’s New Directors sidebar. The film is described as a blend of speculative fiction, ghost cinema and Patagonian hauntology.

The story follows the ghost of French filmmaker Lucien Castelnau, portrayed by Denis Lavant, who awakens after a century trapped in a glacier to a Patagonia reshaped by a technological society, indigenous memory and displaced communities. The synopsis asks whether a film can exist if it is never seen, and likens Castelnau to an erratic boulder wandering between times.

"Erratics" is produced by Chile’s Fiebre SpA, France’s La Belle Affaire Productions and Argentina’s Un Puma. International sales are handled by Paris‑based MPM Premium, whose head of festivals and Ibero‑American sales, Natalia Isotta, said the film turns the journey to an audience into the heart of its own story. Woodroffe, who also serves as screenwriter, cinematographer and colorist, cited a serendipitous research mix‑up about a 1925 ethnographic documentary as the film’s origin.

The reporting is limited to the Variety article; further details on distribution, critical response or box‑office prospects were not provided.
