‘Ah Girl,’ ‘The Sea Speaks His Name’ to Bookend Jakarta Film Week

Singaporean director Ang Geck’s ‘Ah Girl’ opens and Yosep Anggi Noen’s ‘The Sea Speaks His Name’ closes Jakarta Film Week, scheduled for Oct.

The sixth Jakarta Film Week will open with Ang Geck’s “Ah Girl” and close with Yosep Anggi Noen’s “The Sea Speaks His Name” (Indonesian title “Laut Bercerita”). The festival runs Oct. 21–25 and the program was unveiled at a press conference on Sept. 23 at CGV Grand Indonesia, attended by Jakarta Deputy Governor Rano Karno and Ministry of Culture official Ahmad Mahendra.

The 2026 edition adopts the theme “Encounters,” following 2025’s “Reignite.” Festival director Rina Damayanti said the theme reflects the festival’s role in bringing together filmmakers, discovering talent, and strengthening Indonesia’s film ecosystem.

The lineup includes the Global Feature Competition (e.g., Jane Schoenbrun’s “Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma”), the Currents strand, and several Indonesian premieres such as Yogi S. Calam’s “Togel.” Eight Jakarta‑set short films will be shown through the Jakarta Film Fund, a first for the festival, and ten local producers were selected for the JFWNET Producers Lab. Industry activities feature a Pitching Forum, Talents Hub, and a Netflix‑backed kids‑content contest organized with APROFI and BPI.

The Jakarta Provincial Government, Jakarta Film Commission, and the Ministry of Culture back the event, with venues across the city including CGV Grand Indonesia and Taman Ismail Marzuki. Outreach efforts include quiz events, short‑film programs at JITEX, and a free streaming slate of 24 shorts on Vidio from Sept. 20 to Oct. 20. The available reporting is limited to the details provided in the announcement.
