BitMEX has ceased trading, deposits and new positions after 11 years, but still lets users log in and withdraw funds while charging a monthly fee on any remaining balances.
BitMEX announced that trading, deposits and the opening of new positions ended at 04:00 UTC on Tuesday, ending its 11‑year operation. The exchange said users can still log in to the platform and withdraw their balances.
The company urged customers to withdraw funds and warned that verified (KYC) accounts with remaining balances will incur a monthly charge calculated on an annualized 1 % of assets or a $50 minimum, whichever is greater.
BitMEX disclosed that the shutdown follows a strategic review by its parent, HDR Global Trading, conducted after the exchange reportedly lost ground in the perpetual futures market it helped create. The closure was first announced in July.
Withdrawals remain available as the wind‑down proceeds, but the report provides no further detail on the final disposition of any remaining assets.
