Drone strike on displaced-persons camp in Sudan’s Blue Nile kills 41, rights group says

A drone strike hit a camp for displaced people in Abu Shandi, in Sudan’s Blue Nile region near the Ethiopian border, killing 41 people on Friday, Emergency Lawyers said. Eight children were among those reported killed.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said initial reports indicated that most of the casualties were women and children. The agency said the area had faced sustained attacks in recent weeks, displacing thousands of civilians and exposing many more to serious danger.

Emergency Lawyers attributed the strike to Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces, which are fighting the Sudanese army in a power struggle that began in 2023. The conflict has killed hundreds of thousands of people and forced more than 14 million from their homes.

The army controls much of central and eastern Sudan, while the RSF is based in Darfur and controls areas in the south. Both sides have been accused of carrying out drone attacks. The reported deaths add to the civilian toll in a war that has left millions of people needing medical assistance.
